A Day of Giving

A Day of Giving is a fundraising event that promotes community involvement and helps support organizations that bring hope to those in need. A Day of Giving provides individuals with the opportunity to unite for one day to share products, services and time to assist in sustaining organizations focused on helping women and children exit crisis situations such as homelessness, domestic violence and drug/alcohol addiction.

I began organizing A Day of Giving in 1999 when I had difficulty finding a charity to volunteer my time with. I needed a charity with some flexibility and I couldn't find one that could accept the small amount of time I could offer. I then tried to donate massage services to women and children at a shelter and found government regulations restricted me from donating my valuable services.

I kept thinking "What can I do? The little bit I can do will never help much! Then I smiled at a homeless person on the street and upon seeing that smile returned, realized that even a small act of compassion and attention could make a world of difference to someone who had none! I decided that I wanted to create a way that individuals could choose how much time and energy to donate toward a cause. So I created A Day of Giving in a fashion that allows people to donate services, products or time in any amount. I know that no one person will solve all the worlds' problems, but by joining together we can create a force that helps someone who is struggling or who has lost hope.

The intention of A Day of Giving is always the same: Find an organization that is headed by individuals who dedicate their time and energy to helping women and children in need and reward/ support that organizations' efforts by hosting a charity event from which all proceeds will be donated to that organization. Organizations are researched and chosen very carefully!

In order to be eligible to receive funds from A Day of Giving, an organization must be a least 95% volunteer based, be NON-PROFIT, must help WOMEN and/or CHILDREN in crisis situations, CANNOT accept ANY government funding, monies raised must go directly to aid services or supplies for those in need and ALL proceeds must help individuals within the LOCAL community. This Year Stand Up for Kids, has been chosen to be the beneficiary of ALL proceeds raised by A Day of Giving's event. Indulge Your Senses to be held August 15th. Stand Up for Kids helps homeless teens get off the streets.

One key difference between A Day of Giving and other charity events is that there are no tiers of sponsorship.  The idea is to build community involvement and get people to realize that a little can go a long way. We encourage individuals and businesses to give whatever they feel comfortable giving, everyone gets the same treatment whether they give a $5 or a $500 item or sponsorship.  Obviously the greater the donation the better, but if someone only has $5 and they give it, then they have given everything and their contribution should not be overlooked just because they have less to give.
